 Expectations

The Institute offers music business workshops, masterclasses, clinics, coaching, and weekly jam sessions that help young players understand both the craft and the industry, preparing them for sustainable careers. Students participate in monthly performance residencies (compensated), independent studies with faculty, guest artist clinics, lectures, and jam sessions. Academic excellence is expected; students should maintain a GPA above 3.0, and those who fall below must complete additional written reflection and obtain a letter from their teacher regarding effort and behavior. Audition Repertoire & Jazz History Focus

The Audition Repertoire List includes foundational jazz standards and blues, such as: Straight No Chaser, Now’s the Time, Billie’s Bounce, One Note Samba, ’Round Midnight, Blue Monk, C Jam Blues, Blue Train, Freddie Freeloader, Bye Bye Blackbird, All Blues, The Days of Wine & Roses, Blue Bossa, In a Sentimental Mood, Body & Soul, Speak Low, Moanin, Blue Seven, Bernie’s Tune, and Take the “A” Train. Our jazz history and curriculum highlight jazz as a music born from the oppression faced by Africans in America, rooted in the church and shaped by pioneers like Buddy Bolden. Students learn to honor this legacy, gain national recognition through competitions and scholarships, and thoughtfully articulate America’s history through the unique perspective of jazz, supported by mental health resources, community engagement, and parental consent for participation.
